Education Minister Christopher Pyne is confident his university reforms will pass parliament shortly.
But he's remaining tight lipped on whether he's won Clive Palmer over.
Mr Pyne dined with the Palmer United Party (PUP) leader at a Canberra Chinese restaurant on Wednesday night.
PUP has two of the six votes the government needs in the Senate to have its legislation passed.
Right now, those two votes oppose the legislation.
"I'm not going to run a commentary through the media about my negotiations with the cross benchers," Mr Pyne told ABC Radio.
"I believe we will successfully bring about a reform to higher education in this session of parliament."
Mr Palmer on Thursday insisted his opposition to the measures hadn't changed.
