Tony Abbott wants ABC management to do something about what he's labelled an out-of-control Q&A after the public broadcaster was forced to apologise to him for an offensively-tagged tweet.

Managing director Mark Scott sent Mr Abbott a text on Tuesday morning apologising for a tweet the program displayed during Monday night's episode from the account @AbbottLovesAnal.

Mr Abbott told reporters on Thursday Island he thought Q&A was "a bit out of control" and hoped ABC management didn't just talk about tighter control of the program, but actually did it.
