Controversial ABC show Q&A will be moved into the news division of the public broadcaster.

The shift, requested by Prime Minister Tony Abbott, was decided at a board meeting on Thursday.

It followed the widely criticised decision to allow convicted criminal Zaky Mallah into the studio audience in June.

Mr Abbott had written to ABC chairman James Spigelman saying he would lift a ministerial ban on the program only after the shift was made.

Following a briefing by Shaun Brown and Ray Martin - who were tasked with reviewing the show - and from management, the board decided on the move.

"Based on the information provided, the board considers both the program and the wider ABC would benefit by an orderly shift of Q&A into the ABC News Division," it said in a statement.

It described the program as a significant feature in Australia's news and current affairs cycle.

The change will take place no later than next year, and the timing will be determined by the management after considering accommodation, scheduling and staffing factors.
