It's been claimed that the possible transfer of Taliban detainees from the United States military prison in Guantanamo Bay to Qatar was first raised in 2011, apparently as a gesture of goodwill to encourage peace talks.

That's according to a lawyer for one of the so-called Taliban Five who were released at the same time as US army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, after five years of Taliban captivity.

Khairullah Khairkhwa has been described as the most senior of the Taliban figures sent to Qatar, and US government documents published by WikiLeaks reveal he was regarded as a high risk threat to the US and its allies.

Lawyer Frank Goldsmith says Mr Khairkhwa was a senior Taliban politician who had never engaged in combat against US forces, but was detained without charge for over 12 years.

He is speaking to Kristina Kukolja.
