The alleged victim of a Gold Coast neighbourhood brawl has died in hospital, a court has heard.

Kane Barry's life support was turned off on Sunday night after attempts to bring him out of a coma failed.

Mr Barry was taken to hospital last Tuesday after an alleged fight with Nathan Sanchez outside their Southport apartment complex.

Sanchez, 23, briefly faced Southport Magistrates Court on Monday where his solicitor Colin Greatorix confirmed Mr Barry had died.

Mr Greatorix said an autopsy was being undertaken to determine the cause of death and Sanchez's grievous bodily harm charge was expected to be upgraded.

Sanchez, who wept during another court appearance last Friday, shook his head and muttered under his breath throughout Monday's mention.

His mother, two aunts and long-term girlfriend were in the gallery to offer their support.

Mr Greatorix told reporters his client was struggling with the situation he'd found himself in.

"He's very distressed," Mr Greatorix said.

"His position is quite clear. He maintains he was assaulted by the deceased and the deceased's girlfriend and in the ensuing struggle something terrible has occurred."

The matter has been adjourned until December 17 but Mr Greatorix says his client will make a bail application in the Supreme Court as soon as the charge is finalised.

Mr Barry's sister Nicole Barry-Hughan told a local newspaper the family would remember the father of one as a devoted and loyal family man.

"Hopefully we get some justice for what has been done," she told the Gold Coast Bulletin.
