Qld boot camp scheme under review

Queensland's boot camp scheme, and other juvenile justice measures, will be reviewed by the new Labor government.

Queensland's Labor government has confirmed it'll review the state's boot camp scheme as part of a wider investigation into the juvenile justice system.

The former government passed legislation in 2012 to start sending young offenders to boot camps, with a trial to be completed this year.

It promised to overhaul the state's youth justice system and stop recidivism among young offenders.

But the new Labor government plans to review the scheme.

"What we want (to) back and have a look at those boot camps," Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath told Fairfax Radio.

"Obviously, the boot camps ... are an alternative to detention.

"But we want to see if there's been a reduction in recidivism."

She said the Palaszczuk government wanted detention to be the "last resort" for young offenders.

The review, which has no set deadline for completion, plans to encompass the entire youth justice system.

But Ms D'Ath dismissed the suggestion it was a sign Labor was softer on crime.

Her opposition counterpart Ian Walker said the camps were an innovative sentencing measure available to the courts.

"It is there to give another alternative to detention," he said.
