Queensland's embattled Chief Justice Tim Carmody has returned to work under a cloud of uncertainty about his future.
Justice Carmody arrived at the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) on Monday to fill in for another judge who is on leave.
The chief justice offered to resign just over two months ago, saying his position was untenable following months of infighting with other judges.
Justice Carmody then took six weeks sick leave and during that time he indicated he may have changed his mind.
While he has officially returned to work, he hasn't said whether his offer to quit stands.
The chief justice wanted the government to reform the courts and give him a proper remuneration settlement in return for his resignation.
But the government refuses to meet his demands, saying doing so would be an illegal inducement.
A spokesman for Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath said talks with Justice Carmody were ongoing on Monday.
The opposition has called on her to stop the matter dragging on any further.
The chief justice is scheduled to preside over private hearings at QCAT for the day.
