Queensland's embattled chief justice has talked of courage and resilience in the face of hostility in a speech before some of his fiercest critics.

Chief Justice Tim Carmody presided over the swearing in of new Supreme Court Justice John Bond at a ceremony in Brisbane on Tuesday.

Justice Carmody has faced renewed calls for his resignation since retiring judge Alan Wilson's scathing critique of him at a valedictory ceremony last week.

At the swearing in, which was attended by current and former judges, senior lawyers and members of the legal fraternity, there was no mention of the ongoing spat between the chief justice and the judges of the Supreme Court.

However, Justice Carmody cited four defining characteristics of lawyers and judges, including competence, willingness to serve, commitment and integrity.

To that list, senior NSW judge Justice Ronald Sackville had recently added a fifth attribute, he said: "courage and resilience in the face of hostile criticism and public disapproval".

The comments come a day after Justice Carmody vowed in a letter to lawyers that he wouldn't be bullied from office.

In the letter to the presidents of the state's bar association and law society, Justice Carmody hit out at claims he used his office to try to influence the state election.

At his farewell ceremony, Justice Wilson accused his boss of calling the judiciary "snakes and scum" and questioned the amount of time the chief justice spent presiding over trials.
