A driver has allegedly attacked a Queensland police officer who had stopped him for a routine random breath test.

Police say the man elbowed and punched the officer in the face after he was spotted trying to get rid of a drug implement during the breath test, on the Gold Coast early on Wednesday.

The officer suffered a cut mouth and sprained finger.

The man will appear in court charged with obstructing police and possessing drug paraphernalia.
