Qld expands HIV drug trial

Queensland will expand a trial of drugs that can stop people contracting HIV as it works towards eliminating transmissions by 2020.

The Queensland government will expand a Queensland trial of drugs that can stop people from contracting HIV.

An extra 1000 places will be added, giving up to 3000 Queenslanders access to PrEP, which is taken by HIV negative people to prevent infection with the virus that causes AIDS.

Queensland is aiming for the virtual elimination of HIV transmissions by 2020 but says the federal government must step up and make PrEP more accessible by listing it on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.
