The Newman government will draw up a 30-year plan to ensure the resources sector continues to drive the Queensland economy.

Premier Campbell Newman says the government will open up new mining regions, including the Galilee Basin, to get the sector booming again.

He says the government will hold a series of forums with industry stakeholders to create a long-term plan and vision for the sector.

"The importance of this ResourcesQ initiative can't be underestimated because it is in all of our interests to ensure we work together to strengthen our economic base," he told parliament on Tuesday.

He said recent global economic conditions have had a negative impact on the mining sector, but the long-term prospects for the sector are "extremely positive".

Despite the mining downturn, the resources sector had remained a strong driver of Queensland's economy, Mr Newman said.

Last financial year alone, the sector generated more than $3.5 billion in royalties for the state and delivered 70,000 direct jobs, he said.

ResourcesQ is based on the government's DestinationQ initiative, which is designed to revitalise the state's tourism industry.

Mr Newman said he would provide more details at a Queensland Resources Council event on Tuesday.
