Qld govt to handpick anti-corruption boss

Queensland's government can now appoint the head of the state's corruption watchdog without needing bipartisan support.

Queensland's government will now handpick the state's anti-corruption boss after new laws passed state parliament.

The government can appoint the head of the renamed Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) without bipartisan support.

However, under some 11th hour amendments on Wednesday night, a government-stacked parliamentary committee was given the power to veto those appointments.

The CCC will also have to give crime fighting and corruption investigations equal attention.

The token changes were enough to persuade government MP Chris Davis not to cross the floor.

The watchdog has been under fire for more than a year, after releasing and shredding thousands of documents from the landmark late-1980s Fitzgerald inquiry.

Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie says the watchdog, until last night known as the Crime and Corruption Commission, "oozed incompetence".

"It's time to end the shenanigans occurring and the maladministration," he told parliament.

Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk said Premier Campbell Newman and Mr Bleijie were arrogantly trashing Tony Fitzgerald's legacy.

Labor has vehemently opposed the laws, saying they could pave the way to more corruption.

The new model is similar to the one used by NSW's Independent Corruption Against Corruption.
