Queensland's horse owners are on high alert after the state recorded its first case of the deadly Hendra virus for 2015.

Tests found the horse, which died at an Atherton Tablelands property earlier this week, had contracted the lethal infection.

"There are a number of other horses on the property and we'll be monitoring them over the coming weeks," Queensland chief veterinary officer Dr Allison Crook said.
