Qld leads public housing satisfaction

A new report shows Queenslanders in public housing are far happier about their living arrangements than tenants in other states.

Queensland public housing tenants are happier with their dwellings than their NSW counterparts.

A new report shows the Sunshine State leads the nation when it comes to satisfaction with their living arrangements, at 84 per cent compared with the national average of 73 per cent.

NSW was the worst with only 65 per cent happy with their places.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report also showed many of those who did not have a job and lived in social housing thought their rents would rise if they worked.

Almost half the public housing tenants did not have jobs, despite many of them being of working age.

Most said they needed more training, education or work experience, but 40 per cent of the jobless worried they would have to pay more if they had a job.

* South Australia (76 per cent )

* ACT (76 per cent)

* NSW (65 per cent)

* Northern Territory (72 per cent)

COMMUNITY HOUSING SATISFACTION:

* Queensland (83 per cent)

* Western Australia (83 per cent)

* South Australia (83 per cent)

* NSW (79 per cent)

* Victoria (77 per cent)

* Tasmania (76 per cent)

* ACT (69 per cent)
