A man has been charged with repeatedly punching a police officer in the face at a Townsville bar.

The man, 22, was refusing to leave the bar on Flinders St in the early hours of Saturday when he allegedly resisted arrest, pushed a senior constable over and punched him in the face.

Other officers used pepper spray to restrain the man, who will face court on July 22 on assault charges.
