Qld man critical after three-car crash

A 60-year-old man has been flown to Brisbane in a critical condition after his car hit another vehicle head-on on the highway near Crows Nest.

A man is fighting for his life after a highway smash involving three cars west of Brisbane.

It took emergency workers two hours to free the 60-year-old from the wreckage after his vehicle slammed into another car travelling in the opposite direction.

A third vehicle was clipped in the collision, which police say happened about 9.30am (AEST) on the New England Highway just north of Crows Nest.

The man has been airlifted by helicopter to Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition.

A 62-year-old woman who was driving the second car was also seriously injured and has been taken by ambulance to Toowoomba Base Hospital.

The two people in the car that was clipped escaped with minor injuries.

The highway remains closed while police investigate.
