A young man has been crushed to death at a school Christmas carols event west of Brisbane after a ride he was dismantling fell on him.

A man has been crushed to death while dismantling a ride after a school Christmas carol night, west of Brisbane.

The 20-year-old was killed when the ride came down on top of him at Collingwood Park State School at Ipswich about 9.20pm on Tuesday, police told AAP.

The accident happened after the school had wrapped up its end of year carols by torchlight event on the school oval.

The man died at the scene and police said the event is being treated as a workplace accident.
