The Queensland man who shot his ex-partner in front of terrified diners before turning the gun on himself at a McDonald's restaurant has died.

Steven Lock, 57, had been in a critical condition in the Gold Coast University Hospital after shooting estranged wife Karina at the Helensvale outlet on Thursday morning.

Witnesses said he'd followed her into the restaurant, put his arm around her, pressed the gun to her chest and fired.

It's understood he then turned the weapon on himself, with police confirming he died from his injuries on Friday morning.

It comes after his former partner reportedly moved from their Maryborough home to make a fresh start on the Gold Coast.

Police said patrons and staff had been left "distraught" after seeing the woman gunned down.

She was one of two women killed this week in domestic violence attacks on the Gold Coast, after 24-year-old Tara Brown died in hospital after suffering an alleged fatal bashing at the hands of her former partner.

These incidents, combined with the alleged murder of a young girl earlier in the week and machete-attack on Thursday, have prompted the Palaszczuk government to fast-track laws to tackle family violence.

"It's been a shocking week in terms of domestic violence attacks," said Queensland Deputy Premier Jackie Trad.

Meanwhile, floral tributes have been left in the hedge lining the fast-food store, which reopened on Friday, with flags outside at half-mast.

Police investigations are ongoing and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
