Qld meningococcal probe to start

The deaths of two patients in separate cases involving sepsis at two Queensland hospitals will be probed by a coroner.

The failure of staff at Queensland hospitals to recognise two patients' sepsis prior to their deaths will be probed during a coronial inquest.

Jasmyn Louise Carter-Maher, 17, was suffering a headache, dizziness and body aches when she was admitted to Warwick Hospital in the Darling Downs region in August last year.

The teenager died from meningococcal septicaemia after she developed a rash and her condition deteriorated.

Eight months earlier and in the same region, Verris Dawn Wright, 86, died from septic shock related to a bowel infection after being discharged from Oakey Hospital.

The joint inquest, expected to run over four days from Tuesday in Toowoomba, will examine the adequacy of care provided to each patient in the lead up to their deaths.
