A north Queensland police sergeant will appear in a Cairns court this month on dishonesty charges.

A north Queensland police officer has resigned before appearing in court on charges of dishonesty.

The 47-year-old sergeant was on Thursday issued with a notice to appear in relation to the charges.

His resignation was accepted the same day.

A police spokeswoman said she could not comment further on the case.

The man will appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on August 18.
