Qld police chief faces task to win support

Queensland Police Commissioner Ian Stewart is faced with a huge task to win back support within the ranks after his controversial reappointment.

Queensland's police chief faces a major challenge if he is to win back support from within the ranks after his controversial reappointment.

Commissioner Ian Stewart will arrive at work on Wednesday knowing he will be at the helm for another two years.

But he will also know his leadership is under attack after the police union lambasted his reappointment.

Mr Stewart's tenure was extended on Tuesday by Police Minister Jo-Ann Miller, despite months of union criticism.

Queensland Police Union president Ian Leavers has branded the extension as "unacceptable" and a "behind closed doors deal".

Mr Leavers said Mr Stewart's first priority should be to change his leadership style because morale is at an all-time low.

However Mr Stewart, who took the helm in 2012, has dismissed suggestions disgruntled staff are affecting the police force.

"There will always be people who have a different view of the styles of leadership within organisations as big as mine," he said.

"I'm not there for the popularity contest."
