Qld poll looks more likely for next year

The chance of a Queensland election being called this year has become more unlikely after Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk indicated parliament will sit next week.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has committed to parliament sitting next week, making an election this year less likely.

A potential election date of November 18, widely tipped by political pundits, needs to be called by next Tuesday at the latest to meet requirements for a minimum 26-day campaign.

However, Ms Palaszczuk told reporters on Wednesday she intended parliament would sit through the week, with "important legislation" still to get through.

"There's security payments (for subcontractors), there's reducing the paperwork for people living in retirement villages as well. That's a very important reform," the Labor premier said.

"Yes, I have every intention of sitting next week."

November 18 had been seen as the last viable Saturday for the poll to be held before the end of 2017.

The following weekend clashes with cricket's first Ashes Test, held at the Gabba, and the weekends in December are among Christmas school holidays.

That pushes the possible election date to February or early March 2018, after school returns from the summer holidays but before the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April.

The poll can be held as late as the first weekend in May but it's unlikely the minority government would wait until then because it would mean part of the campaign would be held during the Games.

Election date speculation will end when fixed-four year terms take effect after the next election, with voting to be always held on the last Saturday in October.

Ms Palaszczuk maintains her intention is for her government to see out the full term, which would allow the winner in the next parliament to rule until October 30, 2021.
