Qld premier braves shoppers on campaign

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman has ditched the script in the hustings north of Brisbane, walking through a local shopping centre.

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman has braved shoppers on his first walkthrough in front of the cameras north of Brisbane.

Mr Newman's highly staged-managed election campaign has been criticised by the media, but at Northlakes Costco on Monday he finally ditched the script and met real people.

Flanked by Transport Minister Scott Emerson, local Murrumba MP Reg Gulley, Kallangur MP Trevor Ruthenberg and an army of advancers, Mr Newman looked calm and confident the whole time.

The Liberal National Party has been keen to claim credit for approving the multi-million-dollar Costco project after it was held up by the local Moreton Bay Regional Council.

The premier spoke to one older couple about the public health system and one man from Papua New Guinea, who wished him well, but most people were just keen to have a yarn about the enormous bulk quantities of food available.

It marked a departure from his guarded campaign plan and an obvious effort to be more publicly visible.

Even if, as he strolled through the meat and rotisserie section, many avoided him and others still seemed not to really recognise him.
