Parents in central Queensland are being asked to check before sending children to school, with many remaining closed as communities recover from Cyclone Marcia.

Education Minister Kate Jones says closures will remain in place until damage assessments and debris clearing have been completed.

"Work is continuing to ensure as many schools as possible can reopen however, the safety of students and staff is the priority," Ms Jones said in a statement.

She said parents should listen to emergency services to ensure travel to and from open schools is safe.

"Parents who are not affected by school closures should plan ahead before their school drop-off and pick-up," Ms Jones said.

"If conditions are too dangerous, parents should not hesitate to keep their child at home."

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced state-federal disaster recovery funding is available for cyclone and flood victims.

There are still 50,000 properties without power in Rockhampton and Yeppoon, where 1800 powerlines were knocked down by the cyclone's winds.

The Education department's website http://deta.qld.gov.au/natural-disasters.html has information for parents wishing to check whether their child's school or childcare centre is open.
