A man has been taken into police custody following a nine-and-a-half hour siege north of Brisbane.

The man, who had taken two people and a dog hostage, threatened police with a home-made firearm when they were called to the Redcliffe home about 10.40am on Monday.

Two men were initially held inside before an elderly man was released after about three hours.

A second hostage, and his dog, were released just before 4pm after a police negotiator was brought in.

It's believed the second hostage was a male relative.

Inspector John Hallam told reporters he could not further detail the relationships of the trio but said neither hostage had been hurt.

"They're fine," he said.

"They are helping us. They've got no injuries and they're glad to be out."

Insp Hallam said he was unaware of what sparked the siege and the man was no longer making threats to police.

Police confirmed on Monday night the siege had ended just after 8pm, but would not say whether the man handed himself in.

"A man is currently assisting police with inquiries into the incident," police said in a statement.

An exclusion zone had been set up around the house, with several streets closed and buses diverted.
