Qld's Banana shire awash after cyclone

Major flooding in central Queensland has swamped and cut off towns across the Banana Shire, with helicopters airlifting trapped residents.

Queensland's Banana Shire is awash, with residents being airlifted from a flooding evacuation centre and the mayor temporarily trapped in his office.

People living in the towns of Jambin and Goovigen were evacuated on Friday night after the Callide Creek broke its banks.

Driving rain from Cyclone Marcia raised the levels of the Callide Dam, causing automatic controls to open the dam gates on Friday night.

Jambin residents were initially moved to an evacuation centre at the local school, but floodwaters are threatening the centre so they were being airlifted by helicopter to Biloela on Saturday morning.

Mayor Ron Carige says the waters have cut every road leading into Bileola.

He says some homes and a caravan park on the outskirts of town are being evacuated.

Helicopters have rescued some people on outlying properties and a man who slept on top of his car after being trapped by the flooding overnight.

Mr Carige says he's temporarily cut-off by floodwaters surrounding his office.

"I can see the water in the carpark out my window here, staff can't even come in or out at the moment, but hopefully that's not going to be forever," he told AAP.

"This is the fourth flood in three years, who'd want to be mayor."

Mr Carige said at least one bridge on the highway east towards Gladstone had been washed away, but the council still hadn't had a chance to assess the damage.

He was unsure when the water would recede or when Biloela would be reconnected with the outside world.
