An earthquake measuring 5.9 magnitude struck off Japan's northeast coast on Monday.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. 

The quake was 80 km deep and centred 132 km north northeast of Hachinohe, Honshu, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.

A person in the city of Sapporo reported feeling the quake 190 km away, the USGS said.
