Qualifier Tomic bows out of Moselle Open

Australia qualifier Bernard Tomic has lost in the first round of the Moselle Open to French player Ugo Humbert.

Bernard Tomic has been knocked out of the Moselle Open in France after a defeat to French wild card Ugo Humbert in Metz.

Australian qualifier Tomic, who had come through to the main draw via a win over Mats Moraing, went down 6-7 (7-5) 6-3 6-4 to local player Humbert on Tuesday.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga's return from seven months out with a knee injury was cut short by defending champion Peter Gojowczyk.

Tsonga delighted the home fans by taking the first set against the German, who had fought from qualifying to claim his first tour title at the same event in 2017.

But Gojowczyk smashed 17 aces as he battled back to claim a 6-7 (7-5) 6-3 6-4 victory in one hour and 45 minutes, and set up a meeting with top seed Kei Nishikori.

It was Tsonga's first match since his semi-final defeat to compatriot Lucas Pouille in the semi-final of the Sud de France Open in Montpellier in February.

Fifth seed Nikoloz Basilashvili was the only seed in action on Tuesday, booking his place in the second round with a comfortable 6-2 7-6 (0) win over Dutch qualifer Kenny De Schepper.

At the St Petersburg Open, Bosnia's sixth seed Damir Dzumhur successfully negotiated his path to round two with a 7-5 6-3 win over Austrian qualifier Lucas Miedler.

Eighth seed Daniil Medvedev beat Portugal's Joao Sousa 6-4 6-1, and there were also wins for Lukas Lacko, Jan-Lennard Struff and Matteo Berrettini.
