The Queensland government has been accused of using motorists as "cash cows" for stinging them with above-inflation registration fee increases.
Registration costs are set to rise from $328.90 to $340.40 for four-cylinder cars and from $492.30 to $509.50 for six-cylinder ones, excluding insurance.
Opposition transport spokesman Scott Emerson says the increase means Queensland will become the most expensive place in Australia to own a car.
"This comes as no surprise that Labor wants to slug motorists," Mr Emerson said.
"It is a return to the bad old days under Labor when car registrations went up 30 per cent in their last four years in office."
The former Newman government had frozen registration costs for three years.
Deputy Premier Jackie Trad says the rise in fees is necessary to finance vital road infrastructure.
"We spend money that we collect through registration on maintaining and building the roads that Queenslanders need," Ms Trad told ABC Radio.
The increases will apply from July 1.
