Queensland dad attempts to break record for cycling backwards

A Queensland man is attempting to set a new world record for cycling backwards.

Andrew Hellinga, 46, is today cycling backwards over a 24-hour period at the Holden Driving Centre, where he hopes to beat the current 180-kilometres record.

He wrote on website Challenge for Change that he had come up with the idea after reading about cycling world records on the Guinness World Records website.

The 46-year-old father said he had ridden 16 kilometres backwards on his first attempt but he was confident he could do better on the day.

"I rode off the track numerous times but when I finished I was confident that I could mount an assault on the 180k required in 24hrs," he wrote.

Mr Hellinga earlier tweeted that he had hit the halfway mark.
