A drunken night out has turned near-fatal for a western Sydney man.

Police have been told a 27-year-old man and his friend were walking through Blacktown on Monday night when they were confronted by seven men of African appearance.

The 27-year-old ended up with a stab wound to his chest, which punctured his liver and lung, while his mate claimed he had his wallet stolen.

However it's understood detectives are looking at the truth of the story provided by the uninjured friend.

Blacktown Detective Inspector Paul Tickner said police hoped to get the stabbing victim's account of what happened when he is well enough to talk.

The victim is in Westmead Hospital in a critical condition.

After the alleged incident he and his friend managed to walk back to a friend's house nearby before taking the injured man to hospital.

Police believe both men had been drinking.

"At the time the victim and his friend were just walking from a friend's house on Swinson Road and they were heading towards the CBD in Blacktown," Insp Tickner told reporters on Tuesday.

Asked about the possibility the story police had been told was false, Insp Tickner said police would investigate all avenues.

Anyone who provides false information to police can face charges of hindering an investigation or concealing a serious offence.

Vasanthan Loganathan, the victim's friend, claims the attackers first approached the pair asking for a cigarette.

"They asked for a cigarette. I say I haven't got a cigarette.

"So they say give money. And I say I haven't, I haven't got money," he told the Seven Network on Tuesday.

"But I had some, I had my wallet with $200."
