Australians and Indonesians are preparing to mark the 12th anniversary of the Bali bombings with quiet ceremonies.

Eighty-eight Australians were among the 202 people killed when bombs exploded at Paddy's Bar and the Sari Club on October 12, 2002.

In Perth, a service will take place in Kings Park at dawn on Sunday, while in Sydney a ceremony will be held at Coogee Beach that morning, followed by a family BBQ at Malabar.

The sombre event will also be marked in Kuta, with Australian Consul General Majell Hind attending a memorial service organised by the Isana Dewata Foundation at the bombing site.

The charity was set up after the 2002 bombings to help victims' families.

The remembrance ceremonies will include speeches, songs and flower laying.

Ross Taylor, of the WA-based Indonesia Institute, says it's a day to make a commitment to living better and closer as a community.

"The Bali bombings ... brought the Balinese people and Australians closer together rather than force us away as the terrorists would have hoped," he said.

"Bali in 2002 showed us the very worst of what can happen when fanatics take control, and today both our countries are better and safer because of the lessons learned from that experience."
