Victorian opener Rob Quiney has recaptured some of the form which earned him a Test berth less than a year ago with a classy Sheffield Shield innings against Western Australia.
Quiney made 89, his highest Shield score since playing two Tests against South Africa last November, as the Bushrangers moved to 3-217 at tea on day three at the MCG.
It gave the home side an overall lead of 259.
Cameron White was unbeaten on 11, having started his innings very aggressively, with skipper Matthew Wade on four.
Earlier, Test opener Chris Rogers looked in solid touch with 42, as he builds towards the Ashes series starting later in November.
He and Quiney put on a 71-run opening stand.
Quiney then shared a 131-run partnership with No.3 Peter Handscomb (59), who notched his second half-century for the match, before both fell in quick succession.
Quiney went first, mistiming what he intended to be a lofted shot to long-on off left-arm spinner Ashton Agar, instead chipping it straight to mid-wicket.
He had earlier showed fine timing to strike 14 boundaries, the highlight a savage hook shot off Rimmington to bring up his 50.
Quiney's form was a notable improvement on the Shield form with which he ended last summer, after his failure to make an impact at Test level.
He averaged just 19 over his next six Shield innings, before finally cracking a pair of half-centuries in his last Shield game of the season.
