RAAF makes first Iraq aid mission

Defence Minister David Johnston says a RAAF transport aircraft has conducted the first humanitarian aid mission to northern Iraq.

An Australian aircraft has completed the first delivery of aid to northern Iraq.

Defence Minister David Johnston confirmed the first mission, involving a RAAF C-130J transport aircraft flying out of the United Arab Emirates, had been successful.

He gave few details but said Prime Minister Tony Abbott would reveal more later.

"We have carried out the first of our tasks as we promised we would and as we were requested. To the best of my knowledge that has gone seamlessly," he told reporters in Darwin on Thursday.

Senator Johnston paid tribute to the RAAF crew who conducted the mission.

"I am very proud of them," he said.

Senator Johnston said the mission was continuing.

But he didn't believe there would be any need for Australian troops to assist in escorting refugees out of northern Iraq.
