Raceway crash survivor still unconscious

A young Brisbane man who was at the wheel of a Porsche that crashed last week, killing English racing driver Sean Edwards, remains unconscious.

A young Brisbane man injured in a fatal raceway crash is yet to regain consciousness, his father says.

William Holzheimer was behind the wheel of a Porsche when it crashed at the Queensland Raceway last week, killing English racing driver Sean Edwards, 26.

Mr Edwards had been instructing Holzheimer.

David Holzheimer says his 22-year-old son will undergo another operation on Tuesday.

Mr Edwards, a Porsche Supercup Championship leader, died when the car slammed into a tyre wall and burst into flames.

Mr Holzheimer said his son remained in a critical condition.

"We are of course hopeful but extremely concerned," he said in a statement on Tuesday.

"The surgery yesterday focused on treating fractures on the right hand side of his body.

"He will have further surgery today for facial injuries and we are told that he will probably have more surgery later in the week."

He said his son was an amateur driver but had undergone "extensive specialist driver education".

William Holzheimer was trapped in the car for two hours after the October 15 crash.

Professional Porsche driver, New Zealander Craig Baird, who had previously driven with him on track days, said such training was "all part of the process of building towards being a professional race driver".

In a statement released via the Holzheimer family, Baird said: "Whatever the cause of the accident, we have sadly lost a talented person in Sean Edwards and Will is now fighting to recover.

"Everyone's thoughts are with Will now."

Edwards has been leading in the Porsche Supercup Championship when the crash occurred.

He'd been due to race again in Abu Dhabi next month. He was in Australia for the first time on a two-day holiday.
