AFL star Cyril Rioli was subjected to a racist attack in response to a photo he posted on Instagram while attending the Dreamtime at the 'G match.

Hawthorn's Rioli, currently nursing a hamstring injury, attended the showpiece game of the league's indigenous round on Saturday night.

Rioli's photo, titled 'Tiwi boys at Dreamtime at the G!' attracted over 1600 likes but also a series of racist remarks by one user.

The 24-year-old, who was born on the Tiwi Islands - 80 kilometres north of Darwin, on Sunday posted a photo of the comments.

"In a week of celebration I get this s*** towards my people! Feel sorry for ya son!," Rioli wrote.

The user responsible for the vitriolic message claimed his account was "hacked".
