Radio silence for tech-savvy ABC listeners

Two severed cables were responsible for plunging ABC digital radio listeners into silence for several hours.

The airwaves of the national broadcaster went silent for several hours on Tuesday for those using digital radios or apps, due to severed cables.

Two cables were accidentally cut by two telecommunications carriers in Sydney and Melbourne, leaving many listeners in radio silence, ABC said in a statement.

Those using trusty old-time radios were able to listen in, and the digital service has since been restored and the ABC has asked the telecommunications companies to explain themselves.
