Canberra halfback Sam Williams has been ruled out for up to six weeks of NRL action with a torn pectoral muscle.

The No.7 suffered the injury in the Raiders' 36-22 win over Newcastle on Friday night and will be sidelined for five to six weeks, the Raiders announced on Sunday.

Williams' setback is a huge blow to the Raiders who sit just outside the top eight and produced one of their better performances of the season in the six-tries-to-four win over the Knights.

The 24-year-old, who returned to Canberra this year after a stints at St George Illawarra and Super League club Catalans, has formed a good combination with five-eighth Blake Austin.

Canberra host Cronulla on Saturday afternoon with Mitch Cornish expected to replace Williams.
