Kimi Raikkonen set a new lap record at the circuit de Monaco to take out pole position at the Monaco grand prix in an all-Ferrari front row.

Finn Raikkonen produced a stunning time of 1min 12.178sec to set the standard and hold off teammate Sebastian Vettel by less than a tenth of a second.

The other flying Finn in the field, Mercedes star Valtteri Bottas, was just two one-hundreths of a second behind German Vettel as a host of drivers produced their best times of the day as the clock ran out on qualifying.

Alongside Bottas is young Red Bull star Max Verstappen, while Australia's Daniel Ricciardo was fifth fastest after being as high as second for most of the final session.

Ricciardo's time of 1:12.998 was second to Raikkonen for most of the session until Vettel, Bottas and Verstappen leapfrogged him at the death.

Still it was a solid performance from the Australian after his brakes failed in Saturday morning practice, with the problem confirmed by Red Bull boss Christian Horner.

"It's a different issue to what we've had previously, which was within the brake drum itself," team boss Christian Horner said.

"It's not ideal for Daniel having a pedal go wrong at turn one confidence-wise."

While Bottas managed to put his Mercedes up front and overcome problems that the team had most of the weekend, it was far from smooth sailing for his teammate Lewis Hamilton.

A dejected Hamilton sensationally missed making the final session of qualifying and will start from 14th position on the grid. His hopes of a third Monaco victory were seemingly in tatters.

In his first stint in Q2 the British three-time world champion had a moment at Massinet when he slid out of the turn but was able to save the car; then later on he missed making the turn at the Nouvelle Chicane.

Hamilton was ultimately brought undone when Stoffel Vandoorne crashed his McLaren there causing a yellow flag through the sector as the Briton approached and had to abort his final lap.

Vandoorne clipped the wall on the entry to the turn and slid across the track, driving straight into the barrier and will start from 13th after being penalised three spots for causing a collision with Felipe Massa in Barcelona.

His teammate for the weekend, the returning Jenson Button will start from the back of the grid after McLaren had to make unscheduled power unit changes to the British driver's car.

Button - in Fernando Alonso's seat for this weekend - has received a 15-place grid penalty thanks to a new turbocharger and a new MGU-H element, both the car's fifth of the season.
