Rail line key election issue: Vic Greens

The lack of rail line to an east Melbourne suburb is a vote-changing issue, the Victorian Greens say.

Addressing the lack of a rail line to one of Melbourne's inner eastern suburbs will be a vote-changing issue in the Victorian election, the Greens say.

Victorian Greens leader Greg Barber said Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews must commit to building a Doncaster rail line if he is serious about killing off the government's East West Link project.

"The Liberals promised it at the last election and then just delayed the whole thing by doing endless studies, and Labor won't say anything," Mr Barber told AAP on Friday.

"The Greens are committed to it and the price of our support in the next parliament is going to be that one of those parties wants to implement with us some of our policies.

"It's going to be a vote-changing issue."

Mr Barber said the existing metro rail network was capable of supporting the rail line, and the next step was a commitment to the project with a detailed engineering study.

The Victorian government and the East West Connect consortium signed a $5.3 billion contract for stage one of East West Link, which would connect the Eastern Freeway and CityLink, last month.
