Rain halts Aussies at Wimbledon

Wet weather at Wimbledon has left Australia's last title hopes on tenterhooks, with doubles ace John Peers and junior Blake Ellis asked to return on Wednesday.

Rain has stalled the Wimbledon progress of Australia's last title hopes at the All England Club.

John Peers and his Finnish partner Henri Kontinen, the top seeds in the men's doubles, were locked at one set all in ther quarter-final clash with Kiwi Michael Venus and American Ryan Harrison when play was suspended for the day.

The match was on serve with Peers and Kontinen level with the French Open champions at 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 4-3 before being asked to return on Wednesday.

Blake Ellis was potentially two games from a berth in the junior boys' third round when play was suspended with the Queenslander leading Mexico's Alan Fernando Rubio Fierros 6-3 5-5.

As well as Peers and Ellis having to come back, French Open runners-up Ashleigh Barty and Casey Dellacqua will also resume their title quest on Wednesday in the women's doubles.

Barty and Dellacqua face Russian second seeds Ekaterina Makarova and Elina Vesnina for a place in the semi-finals.

Runners-up at The All England Club in 2013, Barty and Dellacqua are looking to continue their stellar grasscourt season after landing the title in Birmingham and reaching the final in Eastbourne.

"We're really confident," Barty said.

"We've had a lot of matches on grass, a few more than (Makarova and Vesnina) have.

"On our day, we can beat any team in the draw."
