Rain may soon offer some respite to crews battling the Bangor bushfire which has been burning for a month in South Australia's Southern Flinders Ranges.

The CFS has issued a watch-and-act warning for people in townships near the uncontrolled fire.

The fire on Wednesday was travelling in a northerly and easterly direction towards the communities in the Wirrabara Forest, Wirrabara Township and Stone Hut.

Since January 14, it has burnt through 34,473 hectares and has a perimeter of 195 kilometres.

The CFS says that 150 firefighters and 30 farm fire units worked on a backburn overnight across difficult terrain.

Crews on Wednesday faced erratic winds and high temperatures which the CFS said posed significant challenges for firefighters.

The eastern sector of the fire continues to be a concern, with firefighters supported by aerial bombers actively working in these areas to protect the townships of Laura, Stone Hut and Wirrabara.

Although rain is predicted from late Thursday, the CFS advises the community to maintain awareness of the fire situation.

People should avoid being complacent as the conditions are constantly changing as the fire continues to expand.
