The wild New Orleans weather played havoc with a hot start for world No.1 Jason Day during the opening round of the Zurich Classic PGA Tour event.

Starting at the tenth hole, Day raced to the turn in five under 31.

But he dropped four shots on front nine - including back-to-back bogeys on the final two holes - after a five-hour weather delay.

He eventually carded a 69 to be in a tie for 12th, five shots behind leader Brian Stuard, who posted a blemish-free eight-under 64.

"A little frustrated," Day said of his bogey-bogey finish.

"But I'm looking forward to tomorrow. I've just got to manage myself out there.

"Obviously this is going to be a bit of a tough week with the stop-and-start rounds. I might be able to sneak in nine holes tomorrow and then play 27 on Saturday.

"You've just got to try and stay positive and keep moving forward."

Fellow Aussie Geoff Ogilvy turned back the clock with an opening-round five-under 67 to be in a tie for third.

Ogilvy, who has made just three cuts in the 12 PGA Tour events he has competed in this season, had six birdies and one bogey at TPC Louisiana.

Due to the long delay, half the field failed to complete the opening round.

Seeking his first Tour win, Stuard had just 21 putts to finish a stroke in front of South African Retief Goosen.

Joining Ogilvy at five-under were Americans J.J. Henry, Derek Ernst, Patrick Rodgers and Charles Howell III.
