Milos Raonic is out of the Rome Masters event which started Sunday, and uncertain for the French Open over upcoming foot surgery to correct a problem which has flared up again this spring, compromising his tennis.
The sixth-ranked Canadian will have a nerve in his foot repaired; the problem forced him to default a Monte Carlo quarter-final against Tomas Berdych and also limited him this week in Madrid, where he limped through to a quick quarter-final loss to Andy Murray.
Raonic also missed the Barcelona clay event as he rested the foot in hopes of a recovery. But his team said that surgery seems to now be the best option.
"Every single time (he steps) it literally feels like he's stepping on a tack or jellyfish, (or) the equivalent," Raonic spokesman Austin Nunn told Canadian media.
"He's pushed through it. That's why this week it looked like he was grimacing almost every single time he was stepping - because he was."
Raonic had the option to try and rest the injury or bite the bullet and get the minor operation done. Under a best-case recovery scenario, he could probably make a return in time for the start of Roland Garros in a fortnight.
"He is trying to get ready to play the French Open," Nunn said.
"Rome is unfortunately just when the surgery can be done."
