Iconic sunglasses label Ray-Ban has teamed up with not-for-profit organization Onesight to launch a competition for Indigenous artists to create a new design for Ray-Ban’s Wayferer collection. It is hoped the project will raise money for eye health in the process.
Indigenous Australians are six times more likely to become blind, with cataract rates 12 times higher than non-Indigenous adults. Only 20 percent of Indigenous adults wear glasses for distance.
Onesight’s Director of Community Robyn Wienberg says the collaboration between Onesight and Ray-Ban will give a rare opportunity to an Indigenous artist.
"We’ve been working in Indigenous communities and the storytelling through artwork is something that we really resonate with, it’s cultural, it’s about vision and it requires good vision," Wienberg says.
With every purchase, $50 will go towards Onesight programs, which run in rural and regional Indigenous communities, providing free eye examinations and glasses for those in need.
As well as having their art on display on the Wayferer’s sold throughout Australia and New Zealand, the winner will receive $10,000 worth of professional development and a portion of the profits.
The competition is now open and will end on March 10.
