Real and Barcelona in Christmas El Clasico

Real Madrid and Barcelona are set for a Christmas showdown in La Liga.

Real Madrid will play Barcelona just five days before Christmas.

It will be the last game both Real Madrid and Barcelona play in 2017 and it hands an apparent advantage to Barcelona because Madrid are due to play the final of the FIFA Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi just four days before.

The first El Clasico of the La Liga season was revealed on Friday when the draw for the league fixtures of the Spanish season was held at the Spanish Football Federation's(RFEF) headquarters just outside of Madrid.

The draw was scheduled to take place on Thursday but was delayed 24 hours by the police investigation into RFEF president Angel Maria Villar.

With the president still in custody having been denied bail on Thursday, the major talking point from the RFEF draw was the first El Clasico of the season being scheduled for Wednesday December 20 at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The second El Clasico of the season will be played at the Camp Nou on May 6 as the third from last game of the campaign.

The new season kicks-off on the weekend 19 and 20 of August and Champions Real Madrid are away to Deportivo de la Coruna. Barcelona are at home to Betis.

Atletico Madrid will play their first league game in their new stadium, Wanda Metropolitano, against newly-promoted Girona.

Real Madrid's last game of the season is home to Villarreal; Barcelona must travel to Real Sociedad.

The season ends on Sunday, May 20.
