Real Madrid’s global strategy targets Australia

The world’s most valuable football club Real Madrid wants to spread its marketing and management strategy through a ground breaking online University course in Australia.

Real Madrid has been a part of Emilio Butragueno’s life from day one. Literally.

“I have been a member of the club since the very first day of my life. My father has been a member of the club since 1943,” he told SBS.

He went onto play for Real Madrid 463 times, scoring 171 goals and now he’s the director of institutional relations at the club’s fabled home, the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

Butragueno is hoping the partnership announced this week with Torrens University in Adelaide to offer a globally focused online MBA in Sports Management will continue the rise of one of the most successful sports brands in the world.

“Off the pitch to be creative enough to take all the opportunities technology provides," he explains.

The Real Madrid team is in Australia for the International Champions Cup, but the push into the world of education indicates the need for brands to leverage their success on different levels away from the football pitch.

The course offers a behind-the-scenes experience in Spain with graduates receiving a joint degree from Torrens University and the Real Madrid Graduate School.

“Australia is sport mad, absolutely sport mad, and I think we'll build momentum around the Real Madrid partnership,” Torrens University vice-chancellor Justin Beilby told SBS.

For football fans with a desire for a career in sports management it could be a dream come true.

Butragueno himself lives the dream.

“I think for all of us it is a privilege to work for such a prestigious organisation.”

The course is available from next year.
