Rebecca Gibney suffers breakdown

Actress Rebecca Gibney says she has learned how to cope with the panic attacks that started during the 1990s.

Australian actress Rebecca Gibney suffered a breakdown when she was working on a TV show with Hugh Jackman in the 1990s.

The star reveals she battled crippling panic attacks while promoting Australian crime drama Halifax f.p. and even considered checking herself into hospital for treatment.

"I couldn't talk about it because I didn't know what was happening to me," she told News Limited.

"I contemplated hospitalisation, but I didn't want people to find out.

"I remember lying in bed and feeling like the walls were caving in.

"I felt like I was in the bottom of a pit.

"Every time I tried to claw my way out, I'd slip back down."

Gibney eventually sought help from a psychiatrist and has now learned how to cope with her problems.

"I'm lucky. I'm through it, but it doesn't mean I don't have down days.

"I just know how to deal with it now."
