Record number of Aussie bands at SXSW

The organisers of next month's South by Southwest festival say it will host the biggest collection of Australian bands on US soil.

Australian acts performing at next month's South by Southwest (SXSW) festival could increase beyond the record roster of acts already confirmed.

Fifty-five Australian bands will play at the film, music and digital culture extravaganza, which is held annually in Austin, Texas.

Six other acts are in the running, which if confirmed, would bring Australia's contingent to 61.

"It's a record number of Australian home grown talent at South by Southwest and the most Australian artists in the US at any one time in history," the organisers said in a statement.

Brother-sister folk act Angus and Julia Stone and indie folk-rockers Boy & Bear are among those confirmed to perform.

About 2000 artists from 55 countries will play at the music portion of SXSW from March 11-16. SXSW's film festival runs from March 7-15 and an interactive festival from March 7-11.
