Red tape reprieve for midwives

Health ministers have granted an exemption for professional indemnity insurance to private midwives who do home births until December 2016.

Private midwives delivering home birth babies have been given a red-tape reprieve.

Federal and state health ministers have granted an exemption for professional indemnity insurance to be extended until the end of 2016.

At a meeting in Sydney on Friday, the ministers also discussed a major review of the mental health sector, and agreed to a national code of conduct for healthcare workers and a proposal to register paramedics.
